It Just Takes a Little Love

Seven hours left and I cannot say thank you enough to each and every one of you who has chosen to support this campaign. Your kind words and financial support mean the world to me. As the Indiegogo part of the project winds down, I’ll be forwarding money on to the Children of Vietnam (www.childrenofvietnam.org) and to Mrs. Hanh to help with her dream of opening a restaurant.

Mrs. Hanh heard a rumor that we were coming back; I’m so hoping we can make it sooner than later.

I hadn’t realized back when I started this campaign that our dear Mrs. Hanh would be losing her job as the Tam Ky cook this month and that the dream to open a restaurant was more than that, but a new avenue to support her family. I am grateful that together we’re able to help her.

Her position as cook ends this month due to the lack of volunteers going to Vietnam. The organization we went with has had to close down the center in Tam Ky and the children we learned to love back in 2007 and met in 2009 and those who have come to orphanages since will remain. But there will be no more volunteers to play games with them or bring them extra food and clothing.

I didn’t know any of this when I started, but something propelled me and I kicked off a handmade clothing drive soon after the Indiegogo campaign began. I’m thrilled to say that so far I’ve received more than 50 items for the orphans (pencil pouches, book bags, dress, tees, shorts and skirts) from four countries. The (loose) deadline is still two weeks from now and I can only imagine what will come for the children in that time. It honestly thrills me to see each new item, something handmade with love for children they will never meet.

Without all of your support, I could not have done any of this. To you I say thank you from the very bottom of my heart. My heart that is so tied to Vietnam, to Hanoi and Thanh Hoa and Tam Ky. I am grateful for you, for them, for the chance to spread the love and do just a little good in the world.

Can you name them all?

One of the things that has really stuck with me since our time in Vietnam is my love of fruits. I guess I’d never realized how many there were that I had never tried or heard of, but my mind was blown by the variety. My sweet tooth was thrilled by it! I still miss fresh mango and pineapple, but I make do. There are a few fruits I can get here (those are the easy ones to identify below) and some that just can’t seem to make the trip across the ocean with any flavor intact (some of those are there, too).

I wanted to share some of those favorites with you and thought I’d make a little contest of it. It’s only open for those who’ve pledged to our campaign, a little extra incentive. I’ll make you a lovely market tote to carry your groceries, or anything else, in if you are the first person to name them all correctly. English or Vietnamese names are acceptable.

On your mark, get set, GO!

Progress comes in all forms

There are some days I wonder why I decided to do this, but most days I’m still just wishing I had a dozen or so more hours to get things done. The to-do list is staggering these days between work, making a cookbook, editing/re-writing a book, running a sewing drive and trying to get folks to support the fundraiser. Add in family obligations, too. Those are never-ending, right?

But really, every day I’m grateful for a little more support. Today it was in the form of a guest post on Threadbias.

The sewing community has been awesome and I’ve got a handful of people already willing to make things for my orphanage friends. So. Grateful.

Sewing for Orphans

One of the projects that I’ve really wanted to do for a long time is to have things made for the orphans in Tam Ky. I’ve made a few things and we’ve been lucky enough to have people donate clothes, toys, books and money that we brought along on our last two trips to the orphanages.

But I always wanted to make it bigger than me just sewing a few things for a handful of kids. That’s where you come in.

Affectionately known as The Tinies, we worked with them at the Home of Affection.

As part of our Pho for Three fundraiser, I’m heading up a charity sewing drive to get quality, handmade items to these kids I love so much. There are five things, in particular, that I’m asking for: shorts, dresses, messenger bags, pencil pouches and simple diapers. Depending on your time, sewing abilities, spare fabric, etc. you can pick whichever one you want to make. With more than 100 kids ranging from newborn to 17 years old, there’s plenty of leeway.

Here’s the nitty-gritty for you:

  • Sewing starts now! I will need to receive items by September 30, 2012so they can go back with a friend who is stateside in September. She is currently living in Tam Ky and will be doing some transporting. Otherwise, items will be shipped via DHL (cash donations to cover that cost are welcome) and brought with us if we are able to return in Spring 2013.

  • You can send them to me directly, please email for the address.
  • Items should be sewn with the intention to hold up under heavy use. The kids don’t get new things very often, so they need to wear well.
  • If you are interested in donating something else (shoes, jackets, blankets, quilts, cash), please contact me to make arrangements.

To get you started, here are some great online tutorials and some links to patterns that would be perfect for this project!

Messenger Bags:

Basic Messenger Bag from mmmcrafts
Not-so-big Messenger Bag on Sara’s Sew Sweetness blog
The Megan Everyday Bag from Modkid Patterns

Pencil Pouches:

Zippered pencil case from Sew4Home
Pencil-shaped pencil pouch from Gwenny Penny
Zakka-inspired pencil pouch from Noodlehead

Shorts and Pants:

Basic elastic-waist pants  from Dana Made it (pattern here)
Banyan shorts from Figgy’s Patterns

Dresses:

Popover Sundress from Oliver & S (free pattern here)
Dress a Girl Around the World dress pattern from Totes by Sandy

Diapers:

Simple triangles of cotton: Easily made by taking a 25-inch square, cutting it into two triangles and finishing the edges (serger or turned seams).

The Children of Vietnam (NGO) works to provide formula for these babies. This little guy was one of my favorites–always happy! He has since had his cleft lip and palate repaired thanks to donations.

For each of the next four weeks, I’ll be posting my own tutorials on making each of these items as well as sewing up as many as I can.

Thank you so much! I really can’t do this without each of you. I honestly believe that one person can make a difference, but it’s so much better when it’s a bunch of us working together. If you have any questions at all, please ask in the comments below or email me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It’s getting real

The kids and I spent Monday afternoon trying to take care of all the necessary parts of photographing the cover for Phở for Three. I’ve had various ideas floating around for a while, all revolving around eating phở at the open market in Thanh Hoa. It was just across the street from Hong Duc University where I was teaching and we spent a lot of time there, eating both the noodle soup and another favorite: bùn chả. In the evenings, we’d head across the busy street and enjoy ice cream–our pale faces always the center of attention.

It was the memory of that market, along with the one in Tam Ky, that I wanted to honor with the cover photo.

We got the soup, its necessary accoutrements, along with Viet coffee and pineapple, then spent 20 minutes arranging and re-arranging the dishes until it suited me enough to start taking pics. Of course, last night I spent my insomniac hours wondering about every.last.detail.20120807-113508.jpg

But it’s done for now—just need some editing (by a skilled friend) to add in a few other elements and put the title on there. I’m afraid how long it’s going to take me decide on a font, though. Any ideas?

Through the kindness of others, it happened. Special thanks to Susan Beal, for letting us take over her backyard for an hour; to Prado, who let us borrow his camera; to Stuart, my photographer son who shot the photos; to Audrey, my fan-wielding daughter who shooed flies from the feast we’d set; and to both Phở Oregon and Fubonn for providing such authentically Vietnamese foods.

Thanks so much, everyone, for your support, your shares, your encouragement, and your belief in my little dream.

helping each other, recipes, Stuart

Now that we have a few people who’ve pledged and at varying levels with different perks, I’m eager to get busy on getting the perks started!

Mrs. Hanh’s cooking–including Com Ga and veggies

I began typing in my Vietnamese Tet recipes a few days ago, hopeful that someone would want them. And they do! So excited to put it together. I’ve started a little to-do list for that project. Stuart will be taking the pictures and hopefully a friend will be able to do the layout. It is easier if you share the load, right?

Tonight I’ll be working on a calendar to make sure we get it all done at the right time. I’m definitely going to need it.

BTW, if you can share the campaign on your favorite social network or your blog or with your lunch buddies, please do. The link is http://www.indiegogo.com/phofor three. I totally appreciate your help!

Can you help make it happen?

I’ve been working on my single-parent-abroad memoir for a while now and it’s finally to the point that it needs to happen, but I can’t do it alone. I need to raise the funds to have it professionally edited and published (I’m thinking of using that spiffy book-making machine at Powell’s). It will cost a few thousand thousand to cover all the cost, but we’re trying to raise a little more to help out those who were so kind to us while in Vietnam.

If you can spare a buck or more, please pledge. It really is the little bits that count.

GVN, Mrs. Hanh, Tam Ky, Thanh Hoa

The time’s come to get this book finished and on its merry way, but alongside it we’re looking to help out those who made a huge impact on our lives.  Our stories would be lame if we hadn’t spent all that time with the orphans in Tam Ky and if we hadn’t had such an amazing cook: Mrs. Hanh.

Seriously, without them the adventures would have likely ended there and we would never have met everyone we came to adore in Thanh Hoa. And we never would have gone back again in 2009.

Isn’t it funny how drastically life can change when certain people come into your life?

I have a huge list of people to thank for everything they did for and with us in Vietnam. And now that list is growing stateside. Thanks to those of you who’ve already joined the Facebook page. Thanks to anyone who can pledge to our cause.

Pho for Three
written by Teresa Coates

When writer and mother Teresa Coates bought plane tickets to Vietnam for her kids and herself, she thought she was following her true love. Instead, she found that the love of her life wasn't a man – it was the orphaned and abandoned children in Tam Ky, the street sellers in Hanoi, and the graduate students in Thanh Hoa. She found a life that made her happier than she'd ever imagined, then had to leave it all behind. For love of family.
